Energy and Sustainability in the Textile Industry - Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energies in Partnership for Climate Protection
In the "Master Plan for National Industrial Development", the Indonesian government acknowledges the national textile industry as one of the ten most important industrial sectors, with over 1.13 million employees. It is also a target industry of Indonesia's 4.0 strategy, which is established in the "Making Indonesia 4.0" master plan. In particular, the country is an important partner for Germany. With an import volume of US$ 93.6 million, German textile machinery ranked third in the target country of Indonesia in 2016.
Energy costs in Indonesia account for up to 25% of total production costs. However, a study commissioned by the Indonesian government confirms that energy efficiency measures that can be undertaken in the short term can result in a 30% reduction in energy consumption. At 80%, the greatest potential for savings resides in the most energy-intensive processes of “textile finishing" and in the use of more efficient machinery equipment along the entire textile production line.
The project aims to support the Indonesian textile industry in its growth trajectory with innovative, sustainable technologies and processes. The focus will be on the efficient use of energy based on climate-friendly energy sources and to ensure that this growth is directly in line with sustainability. EnaTex sees itself as an applied research project that was developed on the basis of the long-term trade and research collaborations of the project partners.
The consortium consists of six scientific and four industrial partners from Germany and Indonesia. Technical innovations and measures are developed from the project and optimised and evaluated according to their impact on energy efficiency and CO2 emissions. The evaluation is based on environmental, energy, social, and economic criteria. The results will be incorporated into a package of measures that will be implemented as part of the CSR management.
This project was selected as one of three projects with Indonesia in the 3rd call of CLIENT II - "International Partnerships for Sustainable Innovation", which started in 2021 and will be funded until 2024.
The objectives of the project
The EnaTex project consortium consists of six scientific and four industrial partners from Germany and Indonesia. It is a collaboration of German and Indonesian technology providers and textile companies, universities, and research institutes within the sustainable textile and energy sector.
In the operational part of the project, the consortium partners perform the content-related work and manage the work packages and tasks. Technical innovations and measures are developed, optimised and evaluated according to their impact on energy efficiency and CO2 emissions. The evaluation is based on environmental, energy, social and economic criteria. The results will be incorporated into a package of measures that will be implemented as part of the CSR management. The project work of the consortium partners will also be complemented with external expertise for quality assurance. The consortium is led by IZES gGmbH.
IZES gGmbH was founded in 1999 as a limited non-profit organisation with the Federal State Saarland as the main shareholder. An interdisciplinary team of professors and 50 researchers is supplemented by students and doctoral candidates. Core competences lie the applied research on sustainable energy and material flow systems.
Partner role: Project lead; expert lead for energy efficiency (EnEff), renewable energies (RE) and material flows including waste management: lead in technical and environmental status quo analysis, development and evaluation of EnEff, RE and Environmental optimization measures, lead for technical, environmental and economic feasibility studies/ economic effects, including business models development, expert contribution to life cycle costing (LCC), Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Integrated Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (ILCSA); Analysis of legal & policies issues & advocacy on a national and international level, Disseminations and knowledge transfer.
Institut für Energie- und Umweltforschung Heidelberg gGmbH
The Ifeu institute has been working worldwide since 1978 on environmental and sustainability topics with a focus on energy, industry and products, mobility and resources, biomass and nutrition. It is located in Heidelberg and Berlin with a total of 80 employees. The institute operates at the interface between civil society developments, corporate strategies, technological perspectives, and political latitude. The research work is characterised by an interdisciplinary approach, innovative ideas, an integrative understanding of the world, and the maintenance of strong networks.
Partner role: Integrated Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (ILCSA), Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Social Life Cycle Analysis (sLCA), data collection support and GRI reporting.
Sritex - PT Sri Rejeki Isman Tbk
The listed Sritex group is a fully integrated producer of textiles, employing about 50,000 people. The Indonesian company covers all stages of the textile value chain: spinning, weaving, finishing and garments. Sritex produces fashion, workwear and all uniforms for NATO countries, including Germany. The company is perceived as a role model in Indonesia through its leadership style and commitment to sustainability (e.g. ISO 14001, ISO 9000, Anti-Discrimination Code), with impacts that go beyond the textile industry.
Partner Role: main industrial project partner for analysing, implementation and transfer of technical improvements as well as organizational aspects or measurements in EnaTex.
PT Harapan Kurnia
The Indonesian company Harapan Kurnia is based in Bandung and has 300 employees. The production has its focus on processes like knitting and wet and dry finishing of high-quality fabrics (95% knitwear: jersey, spandex, interlock, jersey, mélange, cotton jacquard, viscose fibers and polyester). The company uses machines of the consortium partner Brückner and produces according to Oeko-Tex® and ISO 9001.
Partner role: Technology partner of Brückner, support of data collection and evaluation of energy/ecology/socio, business models, implementation measures in the field of energy and CSR, networking and dissemination of knowledge.
Brückner Trockentechnik GmbH & Co. KG
The Brückner company is a family business with around 450 employees and manufactures machines and plants for the textile industry. The company was founded in 1949 and has decades of experience in machine and plant construction in the textile industry. The company's product portfolio includes system solutions for drying, thermal treatment, functionalisation, coating and lamination of textile webs as well as heat recovery and exhaust air purification systems. Brückner operates worldwide from its two locations in Germany: Leonberg with development, construction, sales, administration as well as an attached technology centre and Tittmoning as production site. Brückner also maintains a representative office in Shanghai.
Partner role: Research and development for efficiency increase by parameter studies, energy optimisation with combined heat and power and CO2-neutral fuels, minimum application for energy saving. There is also coordination with Thies GmbH (upstream wet processing stage) and FTB (support in data collection and development of measures as well as networking, dissemination of knowledge).
ALENSYS Alternative Energiesysteme AG
The ALENSYS Group is represented in this project by the companies bioltec systems GmbH and SUNfarming GmbH.
bioltec systems in Nittenau, Germany establishes retrofit technologies for standard diesel engines and has converted 4,000 engines (commercial vehicles and CHPs) to alternative fuels so far. SUNfarming covers the entire project development and EPC value chain (engineering, procurement, construction): starting with the planning, development and financing through construction to monitoring and maintenance of solar parks and related concepts such as agro-photovoltaics and e-mobility.
Partner role: Innovative zero-emission solutions for intelligent energy supply, design and implementation of demonstrators at selected process steps, integration of decarbonisation of the corporate transport sector. Support of data collection and development of measures as well as networking and dissemination of knowledge.
Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia
Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia is located in Jakarta and consists of eight departments of engineering and social sciences with a total of 11,000 students. The university has maintained cooperation with the A.U.G.E. institute of Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences since 2014. In particular, the faculties of psychology (socio-economics) and mechanics (energy efficiency and renewable energy) participate in the project.
Partner role: property rights, ethics in organizations and intercultural management work, organization of conferences, workshops and current research, data analysis and action development energy/socio, mentoring master theses in socio-economics and energy.
Politeknik STTT Bandung
Located in Bandung, Politeknik STTT Bandung (est. 1922) has three departments of Diploma 4 (equivalent to a four-year bachelor study programs) in Textile Engineering, Textile Chemistry and Garment Production and one master program in the Applied Science of Textile Engineering and Apparel Technology, and approximately 1,300 students. It is a textile competence centre for textiles under the Ministry of Industry and has been the model for the university of applied sciences focusing on the textile industry sector in Indonesia.
Partner role: Sustainability in textiles and clothing, data evaluation and development of ecological measures, focus on sustainable alternative textile processing and wastewater treatment, organisation of conferences, workshops and current research, supervision of bachelor/master/Ph.D. theses in the field of textiles.
Hochschule Niederrhein - University of Applied Sciences
The Department of Textile and Clothing Technology of Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences (Moenchengladbach) is represented in this project by its two research institutes A.U.G.E. (Occupational Safety, Environmental Protection, Health Promotion and Ethics) and FTB (Research Institute for Textile and Clothing).
The faculty has 33 professors, 64 employees and 2,000 students, the largest of its kind in Europe. The FTB conducts applied research for the industry along the textile value chain (e.g. smart textiles, functionalisation, digital printing). The A.U.G.E. Institute and the attached EthNa Competence Centre CSR focus especially on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and occupational safety and health.
Partner role: research and further development of innovative finishing processes (e.g. through the use of ultrasonic technologies and minimum application), developing criteria of social compliance to build up CSR management, integration of criteria in ILCA (sLCA), sustainability reporting (GRI), dissemination of knowledge.
